Oh, those quiet first few weeks at home with a newborn. There really is nothing like it and I can promise you as a mom myself, you won’t ever want to forget it.
Several of my newborn clients have siblings attending their session and the majority of them are toddlers. So here is the honest truth about newborn lifestyle portraits with toddlers. Your toddler isn’t going to cooperate every moment of your session. It’s just not the way they’re wired and they’ll inevitably loose interest in sitting still for photos. And you know what, that OK!
I try my best to eliminate as much stress as I possibly can with busy littles. My sessions are always baby/child led. If something isn’t working, we redirect and try something different. I also embrace the chaos and let your kids be kids. We sing songs, play games, and move around. A lot. While they’re busy playing, I’m actually capturing sweet, authentic moments that truly document your little loves in this phase of life.
That said, some toddlers just aren’t going to have it. We have to keep in mind that their small worlds have been shaken to the core with the addition of a new sibling and no amount of songs, games or bribes are going to work. I always tell my parents going into family portraits with toddlers to set their expectations low and hope for the best. Most times, it turns out great, but if your toddler ends up having nothing to do with their new sibling, know you will still be left with a gallery filled with beautiful images.

Keep in mind, the ideal time for newborn portraits is within the first 2 weeks of baby’s life. I recommend contacting me at least 4 months before baby is due to ensure availability.
