Oh, those quiet first few weeks at home with a newborn. There really is nothing like it, and I can promise you, as a mom and Houston newborn photographer, you won’t ever want to forget these precious moments.
For many families, newborn lifestyle sessions also include toddlers—older siblings who are adjusting to the arrival of their new baby brother or sister. And while it’s natural to want everything to go smoothly, the truth is, toddlers aren’t always on board with the idea of sitting still for photos. And you know what? That’s completely okay!
If you’re preparing for an in-home newborn photography session in Houston with a toddler involved, here’s the honest truth: Your toddler isn’t going to cooperate at every moment of the session. They’ll likely lose interest in sitting still, and that’s just part of their nature. Don’t stress—it’s completely normal. Your job is to just enjoy your time with your family and embrace the chaos. Because the truth is, some of the best moments are those spontaneous, candid shots.
I always aim to minimize stress during newborn sessions with toddlers. My sessions are baby/child-led, meaning we go with the flow and follow your little ones’ cues. If something isn’t working, we simply try something different or change up the location. I embrace the chaos, let the kids be themselves, and let them move around as they naturally would. We’ll sing songs, play games, and keep things fun!
Let’s be real: some toddlers may not want anything to do with their new sibling during the photoshoot. The arrival of a new baby is a big transition, and your toddler’s world has been turned upside down. They may not feel like cooperating for the photos, and no amount of singing or games might change that. It’s important to go into family newborn portraits with toddlers with realistic expectations.
I always tell parents to keep their expectations low and just hope for the best. Most of the time, things turn out beautifully, but even if your toddler isn’t quite into it, rest assured, you will still have a stunning collection of photos that capture your family’s story.
