As a Houston family photographer, I know how unpredictable the weather can be—especially when you’re trying to get the perfect family photos with young kids or toddlers in tow. Recently, I had a session that began with cloudy skies and ended with the sun peeking through. Here’s how I make the most of both cloudy and sunny conditions and why I sometimes choose to reschedule to ensure you get those dreamy, golden-light images you see in my portfolio.
While everyone loves the idea of golden-hour sunlight, cloudy skies actually provide great lighting for family portraits. The clouds act like a giant diffuser, giving us soft, even light that captures everyone looking their best. This lighting is ideal for avoiding harsh shadows, which is especially important when photographing young children and toddlers.
When the sky is cloudy, it feels a little more intimate. The light feels more personal, more natural, like we’re capturing you in your true element. I love the way it makes your family’s connection feel deeper, more real.
Here’s the thing: I care deeply about giving you the photos you see in my portfolio. If you’re booking a session with me, I want you to walk away with a gallery filled with beautiful, sun-filled images. One of the most important things I do before every session is check the weather forecast several times leading up to your session. If I see that the weather isn’t looking ideal and if we won’t get that gorgeous, dreamy golden-hour sunlight—I’ll reach out to reschedule. It’s incredibly important to me that you get the glowy, sun-filled images you’re expecting, and if the forecast looks too cloudy or rainy for that, I’ll do everything I can to ensure we get the conditions you envision.
That said, I know life can be busy, and sometimes rescheduling isn’t possible. If that’s the case, I promise I’ll still make sure your session is beautiful. Whether it’s cloudy skies or an unexpected break of sunshine, I’ll work with the weather to create stunning, natural photos that reflect the love and connection of your family.
As a Houston-based family photographer, I’m no stranger to unpredictable weather. While I always aim for that dreamy, golden light, I’m flexible and experienced enough to work with whatever conditions arise. Whether it’s a soft, overcast day or a bright, sunny burst, I’m ready to adapt and make your family photos beautiful and memorable.
The weather doesn’t have to be perfect to create stunning family photos. In fact, sometimes the most unexpected weather patterns lead to the most unique and special shots. A little cloud cover with sun breaking through can provide stunning contrast, while completely overcast skies give a soft, intimate feel to your portraits. Whatever the conditions, I’ll make sure the final photos reflect your family’s love, connection, and personality.
Don’t worry about the weather—you don’t have to choose between beautiful photos and unpredictable skies. I’m here to guide you through the process and ensure you get the stunning, sun-filled family photos you’ve dreamed of. If the weather isn’t ideal, we’ll reschedule to get that golden-hour glow you love. If rescheduling isn’t an option, I’ll still make sure you leave with beautiful, timeless photos you’ll cherish forever.
